Initially, the fact that fertility rates started to rise soon after soldiers returned home from the battlefields suggested to many that the baby boom may be due to families making up for the babies they did not have while husbands were serving in the military. A defining point in this debate is the role of World War II in explaining post-war fertility. While there is substantial agreement on the consequences of the baby boom for the US economy, the underlying causes of the rise in fertility have remained controversial. The large variations in cohort sizes generated by the baby boom have shaped the US economy ever since, including the economic boom in the 1990s when the baby boomers were in their peak earning years, and the daunting challenges in financing retirement and health benefits in the coming decades as the baby boomers enter retirement.įigure 1 – Total fertility rate in the United States The total fertility rate (a measure of the number of children each woman will have, given current fertility patterns) increased from just over two before the war to a peak of close to four children per woman in the late 1950s (Figure 1). These younger women then got married and had babies earlier, and in greater numbers.īetween the end of World War II and the early 1960s, the United States experienced a remarkable baby boom. ![]() He argues that the Baby Boom of the 1950s was fuelled by the crowding out of younger women from the labor force by older women who had gained work experience during the war. ![]() ![]() Luckily for me, the seating experts at Knoll teamed up with noted Australian industrial designer Marc Newson. Livia CaligorĪfter the Generation by Knoll, I didn’t think I’d ever find a good office chair that filled its shoes. Personally, I like to womanspread and slouch in my desk chair, so I need something comfy and spacious enough to allow me to do so while still feeling supported. If looks are of utmost importance, it’s the top pick chair for you, but otherwise you might want to peruse the more ergonomic office chairs on this list. Even though it looks very posh and fits well in a small desk space, the seat is a bit too narrow for me. It could use some more cushioning or bounce to the seat and a bit more flexibility in the back. I value supportiveness in an office chair, but this one keeps me sitting a little too upright to the point that I’m uncomfortable. I find the seat and back to be quite thin and rigid. With that said, it is a bit smaller and a bit harder than I’d hoped. The chair is beautifully designed from a visual perspective and, as an avid fan of sustainable textiles, I have been thrilled to work in it. The seat and back are printed with Maharam’s reissue of Alexander Girard’s “Mexidot” fabric, which was inspired by elegant weavings he found in Mexico. Each component of the chair is made by hand–from the recycled aluminum frame to the upholstered seat cushion and back. This piece is a lighter and more streamlined update of a chair originally designed in the 1940s for the US Military. Here’s how I’d sum up the Officer Swivel Chair: Absolutely great looking and eco-friendly, but perhaps not the most comfortable. Your furniture arrives assembled, and their drivers will unbox and carry your furniture to wherever it needs to go (regardless of how many flights of stairs you have). Oh, and something worth mentioning: Modloft offers a complementary white-glove delivery service. It’ll go well with just about any office desk and decor situation, and it is also available in an equally gorgeous dark gray fabric. If you’re looking for an elegant upgrade to your home office, this is definitely a good choice. The padded seat is comfortable and roomy, and if you want to make it even more comfy, there’s room to add a back pillow. ![]() I love everything about it, from the textured fabric to the refined wood and steel swivel base. It’s one of the more expensive chairs on this list, but it’s a high-quality statement piece that is well worth the price tag. The modern style caught my eye, and when it arrived, its aesthetics exceeded my expectations. ![]() I can’t say enough good things about this design-forward task chair from Modloft. Seen here in a bright blue, it’s also available in apple red and lime green, as well as tried-and-true classic like black, white, and gray. The ErgoChair Pro is made of polyester fabric, molded foam, and has a nylon plastic frame. I can adjust the height of the armrest from 26.7 inches to 32.2 inches, and also move the armrests in and out (there’s the option to take them completely off as well). Plus, the chair’s height can adjust from 18 to 20 inches, and the seat’s depth can be adjusted as well. In addition to the back tilt tension, I can also adjust the seat tilt. The chair has a weight capacity of 300 pounds, and almost everything on it is adjustable. The adjustable headrest is also a nice touch when reclining or just leaning back. The ErgoChairPro is comfortable enough to put me to sleep! My favorite feature is the synchro-tilt that allows me to tilt way back (up to 22 degrees) when I’m taking a break-and I can even lock in my five favorite recline positions, so the chair can remember them. ![]() ![]() On the other hand, Juliet can collect Nick Tickets throughout the game which can be spent on a few different attacks that utilize Nick's head, from firing him out of a popper cannon, to spinning him around on a ribbon. It's rather dull, and each of these Nick-on-a-headless-zombie sections must be completed to progress through the entirely-linear game. Using these will prompt a sort of quick-time event that requires players to press specific buttons one after another. Nick's head can occasionally be attached to an empty zombie body to open new pathways for Juliet. The gameplay may not be as fluid or exciting as the likes of No More Heroes, but it certainly holds its own in following a similar formula to the combat system in games like Devil May Cry. This allows for a significant degree of freedom, as players can effectively unlock new combos at their leisure, making each person's individual playthrough unique. Certain attacks will be unlocked as part of the game's natural progression, but most will be unlocked through the in-game store by spending medals earned from zombie hunting. Most stages incorporate some sort of minigame element, though the core of the gameplay lies in pom-pom hits, chainsaw swings, and the resulting combos you can chain together. ![]() While the earliest levels take place in bubbly cheerleader/zombie hunter protagonist's high school, later stages explore the greater area surrounding the school. While Lollipop Chainsaw may not win any awards as a comedic work, the B-movie atmosphere is consistent and the game does not take itself too seriously, despite the writers seeming to think it is more cleverly-scripted at times than it actually is. These character designs, as well as much of the dialogue, are far less subtle parodies than what Grasshopper Manufacture presented in No More Heroes. Each of the boss characters represents a different genre of music, with most bearing a resemblance to a specific famous musician. Some NPCs swear simply for the sake of reminding players that Lollipop Chainsaw is an M-rated game, while the majority of Juliet and Nick's conversations are as cutesy as they are awkward and entertaining. The games' jokes and one-liners bounce back and forth between stupid and uninspired to rather clever set-ups. He constantly quips about his lack of a body, but also acts as eyes in Juliet's blind spots, rooting her on as she dishes pain to the zombie masses. Nick is a source of great humor as well, considering he is more or less along for the ride, and is well aware that he is by far the most normal and sane member fighting the undead - the rest of whom are all members of Juliet's family. These two opposing forces allow her to become a truly memorable protagonist, and quite a likeable one at that. Some of her behavior does come across as silly, but that is primarily a result of her innocent nature combined with her bloody line of work. Juliet avoids typical blonde ditz clichés due to the fact that she is a Zombie Hunter and has a game plan in mind with each new peril she faces. ![]() Chainsaw in-hand and Nick's decapitated head hanging from her belt, Juliet vows to undo Swan's work. Very much in love with Nick, Juliet performs a magical spell that allows her to remove Nick's head and keep him alive, while his body cannot be saved. Serialism can be found in many different genres of music, from classical to contemporary, and often uses atonality or dissonance to create a feeling of unease or tension. This can include using a series of notes, rhythms, or chords, and often results in a work that is highly complex and structured. In general, serialism is a technique that uses a series of musical elements in a predetermined order to create a work of art. There is no one answer to this question as serialism can encompass a wide variety of musical styles. There have been numerous composers who have written music with a ground bass.Ī method or technique for manipulating musical elements in composition by employing a series of values. The main principle of serialism is the composition of a series of pitches containing the 12th tone of the chromatic scale, which represents each half step within the octave. Act 3, Scene 2, contains a variation on the single note, B, as seen in this recording. Based on a musical idea, each of the three acts consists of five scenes that organize the variations in the original idea. The majority of it was composed during his time as an officer of the Austro-Hungarian Army in 1917. Georg Buchner, a German playwright, wrote Woyzeck, a play based on Berg’s opera. The chromatic scale’s twelve notes are divided into scale units that he refers to as the 12-tone row, and he designed a method for randomly assigning scale units. Schoenberg’s 1909 composition was the first to eliminate tonality completely. In many cases, the resulting sounds were melodically and harmonically unpleasant. Some composers succeeded in eliminating harmony and tonal melody (melody based on a specific key) from their music. While expressionism and serialism share some similarities, they are two distinct art forms.ĭuring the expressionist period, composers did not seek to express themselves emotionally in romantic, beautiful, or programmatic ways. It is characterized by its use of a series of musical themes, or “cells,” which are then repeated and varied throughout the piece. Serialism is a musical composition technique that was first used by Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg in the early 20th century. It is characterized by its use of bold, often non-representational colors and brushstrokes, as well as its focus on the artist’s inner emotions rather than on realism. Expressionism is an art movement that began in the early 1900s. ![]() |
